Odisha's Green Grid Gets a 180 MWh Battery Boost

Odisha has strengthened its power infrastructure with the addition of a 45 MW/180 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) under a long-term agreement between Onward Solar Power and GRIDCO. The initiative represents a significant step in the state's efforts to modernize its electricity network, enhance grid reliability, and support the growing integration of renewable energy sources.

The project is part of Odisha’s broader strategy to deploy standalone battery energy storage systems that can effectively manage peak power demand, improve grid stability, and facilitate the integration of variable renewable generation from solar and wind resources. Its implementation follows the signing of a Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) between Onward Solar Power and GRIDCO.

Awarded through the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s (SECI) competitive bidding framework, the project will feature a four-hour storage duration. The facility will store excess electricity generated during periods of low demand and release it during peak consumption hours, helping balance supply and demand while mitigating grid fluctuations.

As India rapidly expands its renewable energy capacity, energy storage is emerging as a critical enabler of a resilient and flexible power system. Through this project, Odisha aims to strengthen grid flexibility, reduce reliance on conventional peaking power sources, and accelerate its clean energy transition while ensuring a stable, reliable, and sustainable electricity supply for consumers.
